How we got “The Shot”

Date:

On May 7, 1989, in the first round of the NBA playoffs, the Chicago Bulls faced the Cleveland Cavaliers in what has now become one of the most iconic moments in basketball history. With just three seconds left on the clock and the Bulls trailing by one point, Michael Jordan received the inbound pass from Brad Sellers.

Guarded closely by Craig Ehlo, Jordan took a couple of dribbles to create space and then leaped from just inside the free-throw line. Time seemed to stand still as the ball arched through the air. As it swished through the net at the buzzer, pandemonium erupted among Bulls fans while Cavs supporters looked on in disbelief.

“The Shot” didn’t happen in isolation; it was a culmination of years of hardship, training, and relentless pursuit of greatness by Jordan and his team. The moment signified not only an advancement to the next round for the Bulls but also foreshadowed the dynasty that they would soon become.

Years later, Michael Jordan himself reflected on that moment, explaining how each practice session, each small game-winning play prepared him for this grandest of stages. The Shot became more than just a basket; it became an emblematic moment that encapsulated what makes sports compelling—the ability to perform under pressure when everything is on the line.

Jordan’s buzzer-beater has since gone down in sports lore, replayed numerous times across all forms of media as a symbol of clutch performance and competitive spirit. It remains an everlasting reminder of how greatness is often forged in those final defining moments when preparation meets opportunity.
