The Star Wars Fandom’s Biggest Problem Has Nothing To Do With Disney

The Star Wars fandom has a reputation for being passionate, even…intense. While some point the finger at Disney’s recent additions to the saga, the fandom’s biggest problem is actually rooted in something far more fundamental: a lack of self-awareness and an inability to accept differing opinions.

The “toxic fandom” trope isn’t new, but it’s particularly prevalent within Star Wars.  This is often fueled by an unshakeable sense of ownership over the franchise, believing that any deviation from their personal canon is an affront to the franchise itself.  This leads to a constant barrage of negativity, criticism, and even outright hostility towards anything that doesn’t align with their specific interpretation of the story.

The issue isn’t simply disliking a particular film or character, but the vitriol and venom directed towards those who hold opposing views.  This creates a hostile environment where open discussions about the franchise become impossible,  and genuine criticisms are drowned out by a cacophony of negativity.

This self-inflicted wound prevents the fandom from truly engaging with the vast universe created by George Lucas.  Instead of celebrating the diversity of opinions and interpretations, it fosters an atmosphere of division and animosity. The focus shifts from appreciating the story to policing it, leaving the fandom stuck in a cycle of negativity and resentment.

The solution lies in recognizing the inherent subjectivity of art.  Every fan’s experience with Star Wars is unique, and their interpretations are valid.  Embracing this diversity, engaging in respectful discussions, and ultimately celebrating the vastness of the galaxy far, far away, will allow the fandom to finally overcome its biggest problem and truly embrace the joy of Star Wars.
