A former stay-at-home dad says he’s struggling to find a job after his nearly 20-year break from the workforce: ‘I’m underqualified for jobs that I used to do’

After dedicating nearly two decades to being a stay-at-home father, John Stevens finds himself facing an unexpected and challenging scenario—re-entering the workforce. Stevens’ story highlights a broader issue faced by many individuals who take extended breaks from their careers, whether for caregiving, personal growth, or other reasons. The gap on their resume can often overshadow their prior achievements and capabilities in the eyes of potential employers. Despite possessing valuable soft skills such as time management, multitasking, and problem-solving—honed through years of parenting—these qualities often go unrecognized within traditional hiring processes.

Adding to the challenge is the fact that many professional networking opportunities that existed during Stevens’ career peak have dwindled. Former colleagues have moved on to other companies or industries, making it harder for him to leverage connections to find job leads or recommendations.

To combat these challenges, Stevens has begun taking online courses to update his technical skills and gain certifications relevant to today’s job market. He has also joined professional groups and attended networking events in an effort to rebuild his professional network.

However, Stevens remains realistic about the hurdles ahead. “It’s going to take time and effort—more than I anticipated,” he says. “But I’m determined to show that my commitment to my family hasn’t diminished my commitment or ability to work.”

Stevens’ journey back into the workforce serves as a poignant reminder of the evolving nature of industries and the ongoing need for lifelong learning and adaptability in one’s career path. It also calls attention to the importance of recognizing diverse career experiences and the multifaceted value they can bring to potential employers.
