In a tense exchange on Fox News Sunday, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was confronted by host Chris Wallace on the long-standing issue of border security and the lack of action from Congress to address it.
Wallace pressed Graham, a close ally of President Trump, on why Congress has failed to pass comprehensive legislation to secure the southern border, despite repeated promises from lawmakers to do so.
“Senator, you and other Republicans have been talking about the need to fix the border for years,” Wallace said. “Why haven’t you been able to get it done?”
Graham, who has been a vocal supporter of Trump’s border wall, acknowledged that Congress has not done enough to address the issue. “I think we’ve made some progress, but not enough,” he admitted. “We need to do more to secure the border, and we need to do it now.”
However, when pressed by Wallace on specific actions Congress could take to address the issue, Graham seemed to deflect responsibility, blaming Democrats for the lack of progress.
“The Democrats are not willing to work with us to secure the border,” Graham claimed. “They want to abolish ICE, they want to open up the borders, and they want to give amnesty to everybody who’s here illegally.”
Wallace pushed back, pointing out that Republicans controlled both the House and Senate for two years during the Trump administration, yet failed to pass comprehensive border security legislation.
“You had the majority in both houses, and you didn’t get it done,” Wallace said. “Why should we believe that you’ll get it done now?”
Graham responded by citing the need for bipartisan cooperation, saying that Republicans need Democratic support to pass legislation. However, this argument rings hollow, given the GOP’s failure to act during their period of control.
The exchange highlights the long-standing frustration among many Americans with the lack of progress on border security. Despite repeated promises from lawmakers to address the issue, little has been done to stem the flow of illegal immigration or to provide a pathway to citizenship for the millions of undocumented immigrants already in the country.
The confrontation also underscores the political gamesmanship that has characterized the debate over border security. Rather than working together to find a solution, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have used the issue as a political football, each trying to score points with their base rather than finding common ground.
As the 2020 election approaches, the issue of border security is likely to remain a hot topic. However, until lawmakers are willing to put aside their partisan differences and work together to find a solution, the problem will continue to fester, leaving millions of Americans frustrated and disillusioned with the political process.
In the end, Graham’s exchange with Wallace serves as a reminder that the lack of progress on border security is a bipartisan failure, and that lawmakers on both sides of the aisle need to take responsibility for finding a solution.
