How to Give Photos a Compelling Infrared Effect in Photoshop (VIDEO)

Date:

Infrared photography is known for its dramatic, surreal aesthetic, transforming landscapes into ethereal scenes and showcasing hidden details. While dedicated infrared cameras are available, you can achieve this distinctive look with your existing photos and a bit of Photoshop magic.

In this article and accompanying video, we’ll guide you through a simple yet effective method for creating a compelling infrared effect using Photoshop:

1. Open Your Image and Duplicate the Layer

Start by opening your desired image in Photoshop. Then, duplicate the background layer by dragging it to the “Create a New Layer” icon at the bottom of the Layers panel. This ensures you’re working on a copy of your original image, preserving the original data.

2. Convert to Black and White

Select the duplicated layer and go to Image > Adjustments > Black & White. This converts your image to a grayscale palette, which is essential for the infrared effect. Experiment with the sliders to adjust the tonal range of your grayscale image to your liking.

3. Create a Channel Mixer Adjustment Layer

Click the “Create new fill or adjustment layer” icon at the bottom of the Layers panel and choose “Channel Mixer”. This tool allows you to manipulate the individual color channels (Red, Green, Blue) of your image.

4. Manipulate the Channels

In the Channel Mixer settings, choose “Monochrome” from the dropdown menu. Now, adjust the sliders for each channel (Red, Green, Blue) to achieve the desired infrared effect.

Increasing Red: Amplifies the sky, making it appear lighter and more dramatic.

Decreasing Green: Darkens foliage, creating a more contrasty effect.

Increasing Blue: Adds a bluish hue to the image, enhancing the overall coolness of the effect.

5. Fine-Tune with Levels

For further control over the contrast and tonal range, create a “Levels” adjustment layer by clicking the “Create new fill or adjustment layer” icon again and selecting “Levels.” Adjust the sliders to enhance the contrast between light and dark areas, further emphasizing the infrared look.

6. Add a Finishing Touch

To make your infrared effect even more authentic, consider applying a slight vignette or a subtle color gradient to the edges of your image. This technique helps to draw the viewer’s attention to the focal point and create a sense of depth.

Tips for Success:

Experiment: Don’t be afraid to play with the sliders in the Channel Mixer and Levels adjustments. Different images require different settings to achieve the desired effect.

Reference: Look at actual infrared photographs for inspiration and to help guide your adjustments.

Focus on Contrast: The infrared effect is all about high contrast between light and dark areas. Pay attention to the tonal range of your image and adjust accordingly.

By following these steps and referencing the accompanying video tutorial, you’ll be able to transform your photos into captivating infrared masterpieces. Enjoy the creative possibilities of this unique photographic style!
