Mariah Carey Asks Judge to Drop ‘All I Want for Christmas’ Copyright Lawsuit

Date:

New York, NY  – Mariah Carey, the undisputed queen of Christmas, is seeking to dismiss a copyright lawsuit filed against her over her iconic holiday hit, “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”

The lawsuit, filed by songwriter Andy Stone, alleged that Carey’s song infringed on his own 1985 Christmas tune, “All I Want for Christmas.” Stone claimed that the two songs shared “substantial similarities,” particularly in their titles and lyrical structure.

However, Carey’s legal team filed a motion to dismiss the case, arguing that the songs are “not substantially similar.” They contend that Stone’s claims are “frivolous” and “lack merit.”

Carey’s attorneys stated in court documents that the two songs “share only a common theme of wanting something for Christmas, which is not a novel or protectable idea.” They further argue that the songs’ titles, while similar, are “not protectable” under copyright law.

“The public, including Mr. Stone himself, has long recognized that these two songs are different and distinct,” said Carey’s lawyer in a statement. “This lawsuit is an attempt to capitalize on the immense popularity of ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ and is without legal basis.”

The lawsuit has sparked debate among music industry professionals and fans alike. Some have defended Stone’s claims, pointing to the similarities between the songs, while others have dismissed them as a publicity stunt.

A judge will ultimately decide whether to dismiss the lawsuit. However, Carey’s team remains confident that their arguments will prevail.

“We are confident that the court will see this for what it is: a baseless claim,” said Carey’s lawyer. “Mariah Carey is a world-renowned songwriter and her work is original and protected by copyright law.”

As the Christmas season approaches, the outcome of this lawsuit will be closely watched by both music fans and legal professionals. The case could have implications for future copyright disputes involving popular holiday songs.

About an hour later, I felt noticeably more relaxed — not groggy, lawful calm adequate to wander disheartening without my wavering be decided racing. Woke up with no morning grogginess, which was a nice surprise. They’re on the pricier side, but if you labour to unwind at cimmerian dark, they could be worth it.
