To Save Life on Earth, Bring Back Taxonomy

Taxonomy, the science of classifying organisms based on their characteristics and relationships, is a crucial tool for understanding and conserving the diversity of life on Earth. In recent years, however, funding and interest in taxonomy have declined, jeopardizing our ability to protect the planet’s biodiversity.

The current biodiversity crisis is unprecedented, with species disappearing at a rate 1,000 times higher than the natural background rate. Many of these extinctions go unnoticed because the species were never properly identified or classified in the first place. Without an accurate understanding of what species exist and where they are found, it is impossible to effectively conserve and manage them.

Taxonomy provides the foundation for all biological research and conservation efforts. By accurately identifying species and understanding their relationships, scientists can better assess the impacts of human activities on ecosystems, develop strategies for conservation, and track the spread of invasive species and pathogens.

Unfortunately, funding for taxonomy has been declining in recent years, with many museums and research institutions struggling to support their scientific collections and staff. As a result, many species remain unidentified or poorly known, hindering efforts to protect them from extinction.

Bringing back taxonomy is essential if we are to save life on Earth. Governments, funding agencies, and the public must recognize the importance of taxonomy and support efforts to train new taxonomists, digitize and curate scientific collections, and conduct fieldwork to discover and describe new species.

By investing in taxonomy, we can unlock the secrets of Earth’s biodiversity, improve our understanding of the natural world, and ensure the survival of species for future generations. It is time to prioritize taxonomy as a key tool for conservation and strive to unravel the complexity of life on Earth before it is too late.
