William Anders, the pioneering astronaut who captured the iconic “Earthrise” photograph during the Apollo 8 mission, has tragically died in a plane crash. Known for his contributions to space exploration and for capturing one of the most significant images in human history, Anders’s legacy extends far beyond his time with NASA.
The Earthrise photograph, taken on December 24, 1968, symbolized a shift in human perspective about our place in the universe. As one of the crew members of Apollo 8, along with Frank Borman and Jim Lovell, Anders orbited the Moon ten times before returning safely to Earth. His photograph became a universal symbol for environmental consciousness and global unity.
Born on October 17, 1933, in Hong Kong, William Alison Anders went on to earn an engineering degree from the U.S. Naval Academy and a master’s degree in nuclear engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology. Before joining NASA, he served as a fighter pilot in the Air Force.
Joining NASA’s third group of astronauts in 1963, Anders was initially trained for lunar surface missions before being assigned to Apollo 8. Although he did not walk on the Moon himself, his role in photographing and documenting lunar missions provided invaluable data for future exploration.
After his time at NASA, Anders served various roles including as Executive Secretary for the National Aeronautics and Space Council and later as U.S. ambassador to Norway. He also held positions as a senior executive and CEO within private industry.
William Anders is survived by his wife Valerie and their children Alan, Glen, Gregory, Eric, and Gayle. The impact of his work continues to resonate within both the scientific community and popular culture.
The aviation accident that claimed his life occurred under circumstances still being investigated by authorities. Tributes have poured in from around the world as people remember his contributions to space exploration and his indelible mark on history through his lens.
