In a year that saw its fair share of architectural controversies, a “hideous” redevelopment in Liverpool has taken the dubious honor of being crowned the UK’s worst building of 2024. The Carbuncle Cup, an annual award that “celebrates” the most aesthetically unpleasing and poorly designed buildings in the country, has this year gone to the much-maligned Liverpool redevelopment project.
The winning project, a sprawling complex of apartments, shops, and restaurants, has been widely panned by locals and architecture enthusiasts alike for its brutalist design, lack of cohesion, and utter disregard for the city’s rich cultural heritage. The building’s awkward angularity, drab color scheme, and jarring juxtaposition of modern and historic elements have all contributed to its widespread unpopularity.
“It’s a monstrosity,” said local resident and architecture buff, Jane Smith. “It’s like they took every bad design idea from the past 50 years and mashed them all together into one big mess. It’s an insult to the city and its people.”
The Carbuncle Cup, now in its 15th year, is awarded by the magazine Building Design, which invites readers to nominate their least favorite buildings from across the UK. A panel of judges then selects the winner from a shortlist of the most cringe-worthy contenders.
This year’s winner was chosen from a strong field of contenders, including a soulless office block in London, a gaudy shopping center in Birmingham, and a bizarrely shaped hotel in Edinburgh. However, the Liverpool redevelopment project stood out for its sheer scale and audacity.
“It’s not just that it’s ugly,” said Building Design editor, Thomas Lane. “It’s that it’s so brazenly, unapologetically bad. The architects seem to have made a conscious decision to ignore every principle of good design and create something that’s actively unpleasant to look at.”
The winning project’s architects, a prominent UK firm, have defended their design, citing the need for “bold” and “innovative” solutions to the city’s housing and commercial needs. However, their arguments have fallen on deaf ears, with many critics arguing that the building’s aesthetic shortcomings are only the tip of the iceberg.
“The real tragedy is that this building is not just an eyesore, but a symbol of the city’s lack of vision and ambition,” said Liverpool City Councilor, Mark Johnson. “We deserve better than this. We deserve buildings that inspire and uplift us, not ones that make us want to look away in embarrassment.”
As the Carbuncle Cup winner, the Liverpool redevelopment project will now take its place alongside some of the UK’s most infamous architectural disasters, including the likes of the Walkie-Talkie building in London and the infamous “Glasgow Carbuncle” in Scotland.
While the award may be a dubious honor, it serves as a timely reminder of the importance of good design and the need for architects, developers, and city planners to work together to create buildings that enhance, rather than detract from, our urban environments.
