Ballot drop box fires in Oregon and Washington are likely connected, police say

Authorities in Oregon and Washington are investigating a series of suspicious fires targeting ballot drop boxes, raising concerns about election interference and voter intimidation. The fires, which have occurred in both states over the past few weeks, are believed to be connected, with police suspecting arson as the likely motive.

In Oregon, a drop box in Clackamas County was set ablaze on October 23rd.  Less than two weeks later, another box in  Portland was destroyed by fire, followed by a third incident in the same city on November 1st. Across the border in Washington, a similar incident occurred in Vancouver on October 27th, where a drop box was also set on fire.

While the motives behind these acts remain unclear, authorities are investigating whether they are related to election interference or voter intimidation.  “These attacks are not only an attack on our election infrastructure but also a direct attack on the right of our citizens to vote,” said a spokesperson for the Oregon Secretary of State’s office.

The fires have sparked widespread concern and condemnation.  “This is a dangerous escalation of attempts to undermine our democratic process,” said a statement released by the Washington Secretary of State’s office. “We will not tolerate these attacks and will work tirelessly to ensure that every eligible voter can cast their ballot safely and securely.”

Local and federal authorities are collaborating on the investigations, with the FBI offering assistance.  The incidents underscore the vulnerability of election infrastructure and the importance of protecting voting rights.  The authorities are urging anyone with information about the fires to come forward and assist with the investigations.
