Date:

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into our daily digital experiences, many users are wondering if they have control over when and how these AI tools are used. The answer isn’t straightforward, but there are steps you can take to limit AI’s involvement in your online activities.

Google

Google uses AI across many of its services, from search results to Gmail suggestions.

  • Search: You can’t completely turn off AI in Google Search, but you can use the “Verbatim” search tool to get more literal results.
  • Gmail: Go to Settings > General > Smart Features and Personalization to turn off AI-powered features like Smart Compose.

Microsoft

Microsoft has been integrating AI into many of its products, including Windows and Office.

  • Windows: In Windows 11, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Diagnostic data and turn off “Send optional diagnostic data” to limit AI learning from your usage.
  • Office: In Microsoft 365 apps, go to File > Options > General > Office intelligent services to disable AI features.

Apple

Apple has been more cautious about implementing AI, but it’s still present in various features.

  • Siri: Go to Settings > Siri & Search to turn off Siri completely or limit its functionality.
  • Photos: In Settings > Photos, you can turn off features like “Memories” that use AI to organize your photos.

Facebook (Meta)

Meta uses AI extensively across its platforms for content recommendations and ad targeting.

  • News Feed: You can’t turn off AI completely, but you can go to Settings & Privacy > News Feed Preferences to adjust what you see.
  • Ad Preferences: In Settings & Privacy > Settings > Ads > Ad Settings, you can limit personalized ads.

Amazon

Amazon uses AI for product recommendations and Alexa services.

  • Product Recommendations: Go to Your Amazon > Improve Your Recommendations to adjust or remove items influencing your recommendations.
  • Alexa: In the Alexa app, go to More > Settings > Alexa Privacy to manage how your data is used.
