Becoming a Teacher in North Dakota
- Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Complete a state-approved teacher preparation program
- Testing Requirements
- Pass the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators tests
- Pass the Praxis II Content Area Assessments for your teaching field
- Licensure
- Apply for an Initial License, valid for two years
- Complete fingerprinting and background check
- Professional License
- After two years of successful teaching, apply for a five-year Professional License

Becoming a School Principal in North Dakota
- Experience
- Minimum of three years of teaching experience
- Education
- Master’s degree in educational leadership or a related field
- Licensure
- Hold a valid North Dakota teaching license
- Complete a state-approved educational leadership program
- Pass the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA)
- Application
- Apply for a Principal’s Credential through the ND Education Standards and Practices Board
Becoming a Superintendent in North Dakota
- Experience
- Minimum of three years of teaching experience and two years of administrative experience
- Education
- Master’s degree in educational leadership or administration
- Some districts may prefer candidates with a doctoral degree
- Licensure
- Hold a valid North Dakota administrative credential
- Complete additional coursework in school district administration
