As an OB-GYN, I spend my days caring for pregnant women and their families. I guide them through the complexities of pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. I believe deeply in the right of every person to make decisions about their own bodies and reproductive health.
But recently, I had to face a harsh reality. A patient of mine, who had planned her pregnancy and was excited to become a mother, found herself facing a life-threatening complication. The only safe option was to terminate her pregnancy. However, due to the restrictive laws in our state, this life-saving procedure was deemed illegal.
This forced me, a medical professional, to make an agonizing decision: travel out of state to provide my patient with the care she desperately needed. This journey was a logistical nightmare, a financial burden, and most importantly, a cruel reminder of the current state of reproductive rights in our country.
My patient’s case is not unique. Countless women across the United States are facing similar situations. We, as a nation, are failing women by limiting their access to safe and legal abortion care. The consequences are real and devastating, affecting not only the women themselves, but their families and communities.
This isn’t about politics or ideology. It’s about fundamental human rights and the right of every woman to access safe and legal healthcare, regardless of where she lives. We must continue to fight for the repeal of these draconian laws and ensure that every woman has the freedom to make choices about her own body and her own future. This is not just about abortion; it’s about a fundamental right to bodily autonomy and the right to live a life free from fear and coercion.
