When I moved to the Netherlands with my family, I anticipated the famous Dutch directness, the efficient infrastructure, and the abundance of bicycles. What I didn’t expect was the profound impact on my child’s sense of independence.
From a very young age, my daughter is encouraged to explore, experiment, and make decisions. Playground equipment is designed for risk, not safety. At school, her opinions are valued, and she’s empowered to solve problems independently. This trust, coupled with a strong emphasis on communication and collaboration, fosters an incredible sense of self-reliance.
Gone are the days of hovering parents, constantly issuing instructions. Instead, children are encouraged to engage with their environment, learning through trial and error. This freedom, while initially unsettling for a parent accustomed to helicoptering, has been transformative for my daughter. She’s confident, self-assured, and capable of making her own choices.
Of course, there are moments when I miss the familiar, the comforting structure of my upbringing. But watching my daughter navigate the world with such independence fills me with a profound sense of pride and confidence in her future. The Netherlands has taught me that allowing children the space to learn, to stumble, and to rise again, is not only beneficial, but essential to their growth. It’s a lesson I’ll carry with me, regardless of where life takes us next.
