Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine Is Awarded to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 2023 has been awarded to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their groundbreaking discoveries concerning microRNAs and their roles in regulating gene expression. This recognition underscores the profound impact of their research on our understanding of fundamental biological processes and the development of novel therapies.

In the 1990s, Ambros, working at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, was studying a gene called lin-4 in the roundworm C. elegans. This gene, he discovered, was responsible for regulating the timing of developmental stages. While examining its function, Ambros stumbled upon a tiny RNA molecule that seemed to be controlling the expression of another gene, lin-14. This groundbreaking finding, published in 1993, revealed the existence of a new class of RNA molecules – microRNAs.

Ruvkun, at the time at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, independently identified another microRNA, let-7, in C. elegans. His work, published in 2000, demonstrated that these small RNA molecules could regulate gene expression by binding to target mRNAs and preventing their translation into proteins.

Their discoveries opened a new frontier in our understanding of gene regulation. MicroRNAs, now known to be ubiquitous in multicellular organisms, are involved in a vast array of biological processes, including development, cell differentiation, and disease.  The dysregulation of microRNAs has been implicated in numerous diseases, including cancer, heart disease, and neurodegenerative disorders.

This Nobel Prize not only acknowledges the pivotal contributions of Ambros and Ruvkun in unraveling the mystery of microRNAs, but also highlights the immense potential of this research field.
