How extremist settlers in the West Bank became the law

Date:

For decades, extremist settlers in the West Bank have operated with a disturbing degree of impunity, their actions often exceeding the bounds of Israeli law and even threatening the very fabric of Palestinian life. However, the situation has taken a worrying turn in recent years, with these settlers increasingly becoming the law themselves.

This shift is fueled by a confluence of factors. The Israeli government, under pressure from right-wing political forces, has consistently shown leniency towards settler violence, often failing to hold perpetrators accountable. This perceived impunity emboldens settlers, who increasingly view themselves above the law.

Furthermore, the Israeli military, tasked with maintaining order in the West Bank, has been accused of collaborating with settlers, often turning a blind eye to their illegal activities. This includes the destruction of Palestinian property, attacks on Palestinians, and the establishment of illegal outposts.

The result is a system where settler extremism thrives, with its tentacles reaching into all aspects of life in the West Bank.  Palestinian communities face constant threats, their lives and livelihoods under constant pressure. Attacks on Palestinian farmers, the destruction of olive groves, and the intimidation of school children have become commonplace.

The legal system, meant to ensure justice and accountability, has become skewed in favor of the settlers.  Cases against them are often dismissed, while Palestinian victims are left vulnerable and without recourse.

This dangerous trend undermines the very foundation of a just and peaceful solution in the region. It perpetuates a cycle of violence and injustice, creating an environment where extremism is normalized and the rights of Palestinians are disregarded.  Unless this trend is reversed, the future of the two-state solution and the prospect of peace remain deeply uncertain.
