Becoming a Teacher in Alaska
- Education Requirements
- Earn a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- Complete a state-approved teacher preparation program
- Testing Requirements
- Pass the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators tests
- Pass the appropriate Praxis Subject Assessments for your teaching area
- Certification Process
- Apply for an initial teaching certificate through the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development
- Submit all required documentation, including fingerprints for a background check
Becoming a School Principal in Alaska
- Education and Experience
- Hold a master’s degree in educational leadership or a related field
- Have at least three years of teaching experience
- Certification Requirements
- Complete a state-approved educational leadership program
- Pass the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA)
- Application Process
- Apply for a Type B administrative certificate through the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development
Becoming a Superintendent in Alaska
- Education and Experience
- Hold a master’s degree or higher in educational leadership or a related field
- Have at least five years of experience in school administration
- Certification Requirements
- Hold a valid Alaska Type B administrative certificate
- Complete additional coursework in Alaska school law and finance
