Becoming a Teacher in Ohio
- Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Complete a state-approved teacher preparation program
- Testing Requirements
- Pass the Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) tests for your teaching area
- Licensure
- Apply for a Four-Year Resident Educator License
- Complete the Resident Educator Program during your first four years of teaching
- Professional License
- After successfully completing the Resident Educator Program, apply for a Five-Year Professional License

Becoming a School Principal in Ohio
- Experience
- Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience
- Education
- Master’s degree in educational leadership or a related field
- Licensure
- Hold a valid Ohio teaching license
- Complete a state-approved principal preparation program
- Pass the Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) Educational Leadership exam
- Application
- Apply for a Principal License through the Ohio Department of Education
Becoming a Superintendent in Ohio
- Experience
- Minimum of three years of successful experience in a leadership role (e.g., principal, curriculum director)
- Education
- Master’s degree in educational leadership or administration
- Many districts prefer candidates with a doctoral degree
- Licensure
- Hold a valid Ohio principal license or administrative specialist license
- Complete a state-approved superintendent preparation program
- Pass the Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) Superintendent exam
- Application
- Apply for a Superintendent License through the Ohio Department of Education
