Becoming a Teacher in Virginia
- Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Completion of a state-approved teacher preparation program
- Testing Requirements
- Pass the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators tests (or meet exemption criteria)
- Pass the relevant Praxis Subject Assessments for your teaching area
- Application Process
- Submit an application to the Virginia Department of Education
- Provide official transcripts, test scores, and other required documentation
- Complete a background check
- Licensure
- Obtain an initial teaching license, valid for 5 years
- Complete any additional requirements specified by the employing school division
Becoming a School Principal in Virginia
- Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in education administration or educational leadership
- At least three years of successful, full-time teaching experience
- Certification
- Complete a state-approved administration and supervision preparation program
- Pass the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA)
- Application Process
- Submit an application for an administration and supervision endorsement
- Provide documentation of teaching experience and completion of required coursework
Becoming a Superintendent in Virginia
- Education and Experience
- Postgraduate Professional License with an administration and supervision endorsement
- At least five years of educational experience, including at least two in a management or supervisory position
- Additional Requirements
- Complete specific graduate-level coursework in school law, finance, and governance
- Gain experience in diverse educational settings
- Application Process
- Apply for the superintendent license through the Virginia Department of Education
- Provide documentation of all qualifications and experience
